เรื่องที่หนึ่ง

ในดิกอังกฤษ-อังกฤษ คำศัพท์ที่เป็นภาษาพูด เขามักจะพิมพ์ตัวเอน บอกไว้ เช่น informal(คำไม่เป็นทางการ), colloquial(คำใช้ในบทสนทนา), slang(คำสแลง), disapproving(คำที่สื่อความหมายแบบตำหนิหรือแง่ลบ), taboo(คำต้องห้าม), offensive/obscene/rude/impolite(คำหยาบ/น่ารังเกียจ) เป็นต้น

เมื่อผู้เรียบเรียงดิกอังกฤษ-ไทย จะต้องแปลคำพวกนี้เป็นไทย เขาก็มักพยายามแปลให้ได้ทั้ง (1)ความหมาย และ (2)อารมณ์ โดยใส่คำไทยที่เทียบเคียงกันได้ เช่น piss - เยี่ยว แต่ก็มีดิกอังกฤษ-ไทยหลายเล่ม ไม่ยอมให้คำแปลที่สื่อทั้งความหมายและอารมณ์แบบนี้ กลับแปลโดยให้ความหมายอย่างเดียว คือ "ปัสสาวะ" บางเล่มก็มีวงเล็บไว้ด้วยว่า (คำหยาบ) แต่บางเล่มก็ไม่มีบอกไว้ ด้วยเหตุนี้ เมื่อเรานำคำแปลนี้ไปใช้พูดหรือเขียน โดยไม่รู้จัก "อารมณ์" ของคำศัพท์ในภาษาอังกฤษ ก็อาจจะไม่ค่อยเข้าท่าเท่าไหร่

คำศัพท์ข้างล่างนี้ ส่วนใหญ่เป็นคำประเภท informal คือ ไม่ใช่คำในภาษาพูดหรือภาษาเขียนที่เป็นทางการ(แต่ก็อาจจะใช้ได้) แต่ทั้งนี้ก็ขึ้นอยู่กับสถานการณ์ด้วย เช่น คำว่า fart (ตด) ถ้าเพื่อนฝูงพูดคุยกันอาจจะไม่หยาบ แต่ถ้าจะพูดกับคนอื่นให้สุภาพ ก็อาจจะต้องเปลี่ยนไปใช้คำว่า break wind หรือ ผายลม อะไรทำนองนี้

เรื่องที่สอง

เรื่องที่ผมขอเน้นแล้วเน้นอีกก็คือ เมื่อติดศัพท์ให้เดาก่อนเปิดดิก(ถ้าจำเป็นต้องเปิด) เพราะดิกเล่มที่ดีที่สุดก็คือการเดา

ความหมายที่เป็น informal ของคำศัพท์นั้น เกิดง่าย ตายง่าย เปลี่ยนแปลงง่าย เพราะฉะนั้นเราอย่าไปคาดหวังว่า ดิกอังกฤษ-ไทย เล่มโปรดที่เราใช้ จะต้องมีทุกความหมายที่เราค้นหา มันอาจจะไม่มีก็ได้ คือ มันอาจจะมีคำศัพท์ แต่ความหมายที่เป็น informal ของศัพท์คำนั้นอาจจะไม่มี และนี่เองที่ทำให้เราอาศัยดิกอังกฤษ-ไทย เป็นที่พึ่งไม่ค่อยได้ เมื่อเราจะแปลเพลง, แปลบทพูดในภาพยนต์, แปลนิยาย ฯลฯ ซึ่งใช้ความหมายที่เป็น informal เยอะ แต่ถ้าเราใช้ ดิกอังกฤษ-อังกฤษ เป็นที่พึ่ง ก็ช่วยได้เยอะ

Take it easy. - ทำใจให้สบาย, ไม่ต้องคิดมาก	Just take it easy and tell us what happened.
telly - โทรทัศน์	You're a couch potato. All you can do is sit in front of the telly.
thick - โง่	Are you thick? This is the right number.
Think nothing of it. ไม่ต้องคิดอะไรมากหรอกครับ/ค่ะ	‘It’s very kind of you to bring me home.’ ‘Think nothing of it.’
to be on time - ตรงเวลา (ตามคารางเวลาที่กำหนดไว้)	Please be on time.
to take one's time - ใช้เวลาได้ตามสบาย, ไม่ต้องรีบร้อน	Take your time.
tipple - เหล้า	After walking through the cold rain everyone enjoyed a tipple.
tomato-red hair - คลิกดู	He's got tomato-red hair.
to loose track - ไม่รู้ว่าอยู่ที่ไหน หรือเกิดอะไรขึ้น	Do you know where Fred lives? - I've lost track of him.
to take turns - สลับกัน(ทำ)	My sister and Anne take turns babysitting.

Watch your step. - ระมัดระวังการกระทำหรือคำพูด (มิฉะนั้นจะเดือดร้อน)	You'd better watch your step if you don't want trouble with your boss.

to wear many hats - สวมหมวกหลายใบ, รับผิดชอบหลายหน้าที่	You've got to wear many hats if you want to run your own hotel.
to feel under the weather - รู้สึกไม่ค่อยสบาย	I think I'll stay at home tonight. I'm feeling a little under the weather.
when push comes to shove - เมื่อเข้าภาวะคับขัน, เมื่อถึงเวลาต้องทำอะไรให้เด็ดขาด	When push comes to shove you'd rather accept the job.
as white as snow - หน้าซีดขาว (เพราะเป็นไข้หรือกลัว)	I knew that Maureen wasn't feeling well because her face was white as snow.
no wonder - ไม่ต้องสงสัยเลย	No wonder he is ill. He went out in shorts in winter.
a word in your ear - พูดเป็นการส่วนตัว (เพื่อแนะนำหรือเตือน)	Could I have a word in your ear?
Words fail me. ประหลาดใจ/ตกใจ/เสียใจ/โกรธ/มีอารมณ์มาก จนพูดไม่ออก / พูดไม่ถูก	I ... words fail me.
to eat one's words - กลับคำพูด, ยอมรับว่าที่ตัวเองพูดออกไปนั้นผิด	Sam said it would never sell, but when he sees these sales figures he'll have to eat his words.
in other words - พูดอีกอย่างหนึ่งก็คือ	In other words, you can't answer the question.
to have words with sb. - ทะเลาะโต้เถียง	I had words with the headteacher of my son's school
to work like a dog - ทำงานหนักมาก	You can work like a dog and still not make ends meet.
would rather - อยากจะ... มากกว่า	Would you like to spend your holidays in the North? No - I'd rather fly to Mexico.
to wow sb. - ทำให้รู้สึกตื่นเต้นหรือชื่นชมอย่างมาก	The movie wowed audiences with its amazing special effects.

to zing through sth. ไปอย่างรวดเร็วพร้อมเสียงหวือแหวกอากาศ	The arrow zinged through the trees as fast as lightning.
