---------- บางครั้งผมเจอและคุยด้วยกับฝรั่งที่เผยแพร่ศาสนาคริสต์บนสะพานลอยในกรุงเทพ มองในแง่หนึ่งคนเหล่านี้น่าชื่นชม เพราะเขาพยายามเผยแพร่สิ่งที่เขาเชื่อว่าประเสริฐให้คนต่างชาติต่างภาษาได้รู้จัก บางคนก็พูดไทยได้เยอะ บางคนก็พูดได้น้อยจึงทำได้แค่แจกเอกสารคำสอนภาษาไทยที่ลอกมาจากไบเบิ้ล เมื่อผมเห็นคนเหล่านี้ทำให้นึกได้ว่า ฝรั่งที่มาเมืองไทยเพื่อเผยแพร่ศาสนาหรือที่สมัยก่อนเรียกว่าชักชวนให้คนไทย “เข้ารีต” นั้นได้พยายามมาหลายร้อยปีแล้ว เช่นตั้งแต่สมัยสมเด็จพระนารายณ์มหาราชก็เข้ามากันเยอะ หรือสมัยกรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ก็มีหมอสอนศาสนาคนหนึ่งชื่อบรัดเลย์ แกเป็นหมอหรือนายแพทย์จริง ๆ แต่ก็สอนศาสนาด้วย แกมีผลงานด้านการแพทย์และการพิมพ์หลายเรื่องที่เป็นประโยชน์ให้คนไทยจำได้และจดไว้ในประวัติศาสตร์ไทย แต่สิ่งที่คนไทยจำไม่ได้ก็น่าจะเป็นเรื่องการสอนศาสนาของแกนี่แหละ
---------- ฝรั่งเผยแพร่ศาสนาคริสต์ที่ผมพบบนสะพานลอยที่อนุสาวรีย์ชัยฯคนนี้ชื่อ Andrew อายุ 64 ปี เกิดที่สวิตเซอร์แลนด์แต่ได้เมียที่ออสเตรเลียและอยู่ที่นั่น 20 กว่าปีแล้ว เมื่อคุยกับ Andrew ไปได้นิดหน่อยผมรู้สึกชอบใจเพราะว่าแกต่างจากฝรั่งสอนศาสนาคนอื่นที่ผมเคยคุยด้วย คือแกไม่พยายามยัดเยียดแม้แต่นิดเดียวให้คนฟังมาเชื่อพระเจ้า พอเริ่มจะคุยกันยาวก็รู้สึกว่าน่าจะเปลี่ยนสถานที่คุยให้สะดวกขึ้น เราก็เลยย้ายไปนั่งกินกาแฟและคุยกันในร้าน TOP ที่ตีนสะพานลอยแถวนั้นแหละ และก็ได้นัดคุยกันอีกถึง 3 - 4 ครั้ง ตอนหลัง แกพาเพื่อนอีก 2 คนมาร่วมคุยด้วย คือ Jamal อายุ 50 ปี, และ Oliver อายุ 28 ปี, 2 คนนี่เป็นชาวอังกฤษ เขาทั้ง 3 คนนี้ทำงานบริษัทที่ประเทศของเขา โดยใน 1 ปีจะทำงาน 9 - 10 เดือน, และมาเผยแพร่ศาสนาในเมืองไทย 2 - 3 เดือน, Andrew ทำอย่างนี้มา 8 ปีแล้ว, Jamal ทำมา 4 ปี, Oliver ทำมา 2 ปี
--------- การคุยระหว่างผมกับพวกเขาทั้ง 3 คนเป็นไปในลักษณะแลกเปลี่ยนความคิดเห็น, เขาบอกว่าคริสต์ของเขาเป็นอย่างนั้น ๆ , ผมก็บอกว่าพุทธของผมเป็นอย่างนี้ ๆ คุยกันยาวครับ ผมขอนำบางคำพูดมาเล่าต่อข้างล่างนี้แล้วกันครับ

There are some important differences between beliefs in God of Christianity and beliefs in Karma of Buddhism.
Christians are taught to believe that there is the supreme Being called God. The God has power over everything. He teaches people to believe in Him and Jesus. He teaches people to treat each other with love. Those who believe in and obey God will be rewarded in this life and the life after their deaths. The detail of afterlife is not clear, but believed and explained differently by different Christian people.
Buddhists are taught to believe in Karma. The Buddha’s teachings in essence are not different from Christianity. Those who hurt or harm other people in any way will be punished. Those who help and are kind to other people will be rewarded. The results of their own Karma are both in this life and next life. The detail of next life is not clear. It is believed and explained differently by different Buddhist people, as well. The next life of each person will depend on his or her Karma. They may be born again in this human world, or in heavens or in hells. And Buddhists believe that there are several different levels of heavens and hells.
However some people say that they have no religion. They are good people. When they have mental problems, they use western psychology to solve them. We agree that the psychology may help solve some mental sufferings, but not all. Many human problems are beyond the scope of psychology to help.
Some people don’t believe in anything about life after death. They believe that everything finishes or vanishes after their deaths. And this same group of people also don’t believe in the reward or punishment of God or Karma. They only believe in what they and other people can see with their eyes. So when they help other people, they must make sure that everyone or someone knows it, so that what they do will be recognized or rewarded. But sometimes if they get benefits, they can hurt or harm other people if they are sure that nobody know it, that they will not be punished legally or socially.
We agree and conclude that the rewards and punishments of God, as taught by Christianity, or of Karma as taught by the Buddha, are the absolute truths. What we, Christians and Buddhists, believe may be different, but what we do is the same. We will not hurt or harm other people. We will help and be kind to them. And we will take care of our own hearts as taught by God or the Buddha.
