❝ History of the Western encounters with Buddhism, starting with the Greeks following Alexander the Great who reached India, then Menander (Milinda) and the artistic influence on Gandhara sculptures in Pakistan/Afghanistan. During the British rule in India the ancient Buddhist monuments were discovered and the Buddhist texts were translated. The first European monk was ordained in Burma over 100 years ago. After WW2 there was an interest in Japanese Zen Buddhism especially in America. Later during the Vietnam war many American soldiers came into contact with Buddhism in Thailand. Some young people also joined the Peace Corps and travelled to Asia. During the hippie era many Westerners looked for enlightenment in India. Ajahn Sumedho was the first Western student of Ajahn Chah at Wat Nong Pah Pong and soon others followed, so that Wat Pah Nanachat was established nearby specifically for training Westerners. From there monks have gone back to England and other countries to spread the Buddhist teachings there. ❞
