       นอกจากเรื่อง verb + preposition ที่เราเรียกว่า two-word verb หรือ phrasal verb ยังมีอีกเรื่องหนึ่งในทำนองเดียวกันที่น่าสนใจ คือ เรื่อง noun + preposition

       ในเรื่องนี้ สิ่งที่ผมเห็นว่ายากและทำให้คนไทยใช้ผิดบ่อยก็คือการแปลตรงตัวตามภาษาของเราซึ่งมันต่างจากภาษาอังกฤษ  อย่างเช่น เราจะพูดว่า การเพิ่มขึ้นหรือ การลดลงของอะไรสักอย่าง  โดยใช้คำว่า increase และ decrease เราก็พูดว่า increase of หรือ increase of something

       แต่เมื่อผมเข้าไปดูในลิงค์ข้างบนก็พบว่า ส่วนใหญ่บอกว่าต้องใช้ increase in และ decrease in อ้าว! อย่างนี้ก็แสดงว่า การเพิ่มขึ้นของ หรือ การลดลงของ ที่เราแปลว่า increase of และ decrease of มันก็ผิดซี

       ผมก็เลยเข้าไปดูในดิกชันนารี 3 ยี่ห้อดังระดับโลก คือ Oxford, Cambridge และ Merriam-Webster  ก็ได้เห็นประโยคตัวอย่าง แสดงการใช้ increase และ decrease + preposition ซึ่งทั้ง 2 คำ มีทั้งที่ตามด้วย in และ of ดังตัวอย่างข้างล่างนี้

       ผมขอให้ท่านสังเกตนะครับว่า การตามด้วย in และ of มันต่างกันยังไง

 จากตัวอย่างทั้งหมดข้างบน  ท่านจะสังเกตได้ชัดเลยว่า

ถ้าอะไรเพิ่มขึ้นหรือลดลง เราใช้ increase in หรือ decrease in

แต่ถ้ามันเพิ่มขึ้นหรือลดลงเป็นจำนวนหรือปริมาณเท่าไหร่ เราใช้ increase of หรือ decrease of

ท่านลองกลับขึ้นไปดูอีกครั้งก็ได้ครับ

 ในเรื่องนี้ ข้อสรุปของผมก็คือ

       ที่พูดอย่างนี้ไม่ได้หมายความว่า เว็บอื่นเชื่อถือไม่ได้  แต่ผมต้องการบอกว่า เว็บดิกเขาเป็นผู้เชี่ยวชาญในเรื่องศัพท์  เว็บดี อื่น ๆ อาจจะแนะนำเราถูกต้อง  แต่เว็บดิก จะมีตัวอย่างที่ทั้งถูกต้องและครบถ้วน

2.เมื่อฝึกอังกฤษต้องหัดสังเกต เพราะมันเป็นไปได้ยากครับที่จะมีคนอธิบายให้เราฟังในทุกเรื่อง เราต้องสังเกตเอาเองบ้าง  การสังเกตจะทำให้การเรียนภาษามีชีวิตชีวา  ไม่ว่าจะเรียนภาษาใดก็ตาม   ถ้าเราสังเกต ภาษาที่เรารู้สึกว่าตายด้านจะกลับมีชีวิต แต่ถ้าเราไม่สังเกต  เรากำลังใช้ตัวเองที่ตายด้านไปจับต้องภาษาซึ่งมีชีวิต  ผมเปรียบเทียบอย่างนี้คงไม่เว่อร์เกินไปนะครับ
