ในภาษาอังกฤษ คำที่ ออกเสียงเหมือนกันแต่ความหมายหรือการสะกดต่างกัน เรียกว่า → homophone
เช่น แบร์ bear หมี - bear ทนต่อ - bare ว่างเปล่า ไม่มีอะไร

มีข้อสังเกต 2 ข้อเกี่ยวกับคำคู่ทำนองนี้
[1] โดยทั่วไป ศัพท์คำหนึ่ง ๆ จะมีหลายความหมาย เช่น
- right แปลว่า "ถูก" หรือ "ขวา" ก็ได้
- แต่เมื่อเป็นคำตรงกันข้าม left - right , right ก็จะแปลว่า "ขวา" เท่านั้น
- เมื่อเป็นคำตรงกันข้าม right - wrong , right ก็จะแปลว่า "ถูก" เท่านั้น
[2] ขอให้ท่านสังเกตว่า คู่ที่เป็นคำตรงกันข้ามนี้ เป็นคำอะไร เช่น
- เป็น verb → tie - untie, ผูก - แก้
- เป็น adjective → same - different, เหมือน - ต่าง
- เป็น noun → fact - fiction, เรื่องจริง - เรื่องแต่ง
- เป็นทั้ง noun และ verb → question - answer, (คำ)ถาม - (คำ)ตอบ
